BRICS Ditches US Dollar, Settles $4 Billion Trade in Local Currencies

BRICS members India and Russia ditched the US dollar and settled payments worth $4 billion in local currencies. Russian exporters purchased Indian-made arms and equipment for defense purposes and cleared the payment using the rupee. The US dollar played no role in the cross-border trade making local currencies the sole beneficiary of the transactions. Russian crypto exchange Beribit freezes withdrawals, offers chocolate instead

​​Investors stormed the office of Russian crypto exchange Beribit last weekend demanding the return of over $4 million in frozen funds.  Beribit staff reportedly fled the Moscow Federation Tower office as it was occupied by around 50 people demanding the return of over 400 million rubles ($4.2 million) from the exchange. According to the Russia n news outlet Gazeta, employees tried to escape through the back exit but were chased by the occupiers. Both countries are looking to reform the global financial system which is heavily concentrated and dominated by the US. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday and the two discussed ways to push the new financial ideals ahead. Poland has found a spy ring made up of 14 citizens from across Russia , Belarus, and Ukraine guilty of espionage after accepting crypto payments of up to $10,000 to derail trains and monitor military targets in support of Russia . According to the Agency French Press, a Polish court found the spy ring guilty of acts of espionage on Tuesday. The spies planned to derail supply trains en route to Ukraine while also monitoring military targets. Additionally, they were ordered to distribute Russian propaganda, burn homes, and beat people. “After examining the case… the court found all the defendants guilty of the crimes charged, and found some of them to be operating within an organized criminal group,” said judge Jaroslaw Kowalski. Bank of Russia wants to ban miners from selling crypto to Russians

The Russian central bank supports the idea of legalizing the crypto mining business, but only if miners sell their coins to non-residents of Russia. The Russian central bank continues to maintain an extremely negative stance on cryptocurrencies, proposing to ban local miners from selling coins to local people. The Bank of Russia has supported the idea of legalizing cryptocurrency mining in Russia as part of a draft bill introduced in mid-November 2022. However, the Russian central bank wants to allow miners to sell their crypto only on foreign exchanges and to non-residents of Russia, the local news agency Interfax reported on Dec. 7. “We believe that cryptocurrency obtained as a result of mining can be sold exclusively using foreign infrastructure and only to non-residents,” the Bank of Russia’s press office reportedly said, adding: “In general, we adhere to the position on the inadmissibility of the circulation of digital currency on the territory of the Russian Federation.” The new...
